Leading US rentals house Lensrentals has released its latest annual look at the kit that people are choosing to shoot with.
Memphis-based Lensrentals is one of the largest online rental providers for photography, videography, and lighting equipment and accessories in the United States. As such, it is really well placed to offer a snapshot of what the most popular kit is in any given year, and this year has some fascinating data to sift through.
You can read the full analysis in its detailed blog on the subject. But for those who want to dive right in to the main event, and that is as ever the most rented camera, the winner was the Canon EOS R5, followed by the Canon EOS R6 Mark II. Sony was able to make the list with its Sony Alpha A7S III, but that was still beaten out by the Canon 5D Mark IV – a camera released in 2016.
Here’s the all-kit top 20.
The company says it rents more lenses than cameras (we guess the clue’s in the name), but there are some really interesting titbits to take from its look at the top 20 brands. On the one hand, Nikon is doing really rather well and making inroads into the top two of Canon and Sony. On the other, Nikon is doing really badly, at least as far as RED hires go.
“Film and TV productions are down nearly 40% in 2024 as Hollywood still recovers from both the pandemic and labor union strikes,” says Lensrentals. “With short-form media like TikTok, Instagram reels, and YouTube shorts rising considerably in viewership, the need for large production cameras has slowed down significantly this year.”
All this activity in the pro space is an interesting counterpart to the question of Who makes the current best-selling video camera?.
