Simon Wyndham is now a lover of shooting on Super 8, but here's a video that explains the whole production process for all the different formats of motion picture film.

If ever there was proof that film isn't dead, it's the list of cameras that were used for this year's Oscar nominees. By a long way, film was the most used format among them. From 8mm to 70mm, the full gamut was utilised.

I've made no secret of the fact that I'm a film convert. It's only my 'sensible' head that prevents me from going all out and purchasing a decent 16mm film with a Super 16mm conversion, since the actual shooting and development costs aren't hugely more than Super 8mm.

I've elicited the reasons why I like shooting on film in previous articles and videos, however, the video below gives an absolutely superb summary of the different formats and why film is still relevant.

It's been produced by Team 2 Films, and is shot almost entirely on film and is superbly produced. From explaining the different film sizes, through to a development lab tour, and then how to handle film in post via DaVinci Resolve, it's all covered here. So, if you're getting the itch, grab yourself a cup of tea or coffee and sit back and enjoy.
