We profile a hot new short made with Blackmagic kit that's raised some intriguing questions about our own rules concerning what we will and will not publish.
At RedShark News, we've had a bit of an internal debate concerning the topic of this article, the new sci-fi short Temple by Nguyen-Anh Nguyen, which is not-safe-for-work (and wonderfully done) - but, is it suitable for publication?
We receive scores of submissions from filmmakers who would like us to check out and possibly feature their work. We strive to exhibit compelling videos that we think will be of great interest to our community, giving more credence to films that display technical prowess or, at least, ones that support an interesting editorial take.
As an ad-supported outlet, we must also be sensitive to those relationships and, for the most part, keep what we feature here as relatively safe-for-work. We refrain from showing nudity or gory violence and must be discriminating when it comes to difficult or controversial subject matter.
The video notes for Temple give a encapsulated description of the short: "2045 A.D. A new genetic disease is causing humans to reject their own organs. Cybernetic enhancements are the only means to survive. One desperate man is forced to steal cybernetic implants to save an innocent life."
The process required to "steal cybernetic implants," as depicted in Temple, is as gory as you might expect it to be.
What makes Temple different than other NSFW submissions in the past? Well, that's actually a tough question to honestly answer. Yes, Temple is well-made, dark and thrilling, but we've been approached by filmmakers with stellar NSFW films in the past, only to deny publication.
The reality is that we would like to publish editorial around the films we like, regardless of their 'safe-for-work' status, and celebrate the filmmakers who make them. We are investigating an expansion into this type of content and exploring the best ways to position it editorially within RedShark News or as part of a separate publication.
So, today, we're bending our rules about NSFW video. Check out Temple and the Temple VFX breakdown videos below. And, please, share your opinions in the comments about the short, NSFW content and the possibility of RedShark expanding its support of filmmakers.
[Disclaimer: Temple is NSFW with GRAPHIC VIOLENCE which may offend certain audiences. You've been warned!]
