The new RØDECaster Video is an all-in-one production console that combines advanced video switching capabilities with professional audio mixing in a single device.
Following on the heels of the successful RØDECaster Pro targeted at the podcasting world, the rationale behind the RØDECaster Video is that it will provide the same sort of comprehensive all-in-one service for video production and live streaming. It features four HDMI inputs, two USB-C inputs, and support for up to six 1080p video sources simultaneously, offering a large degree of flexibility.
Based on a powerful but unnamed octa-core CPU and a next-generation video engine, a scene-based architecture simplifies switching between complex multi-source layouts.
“The video engine engine, built around an extremely powerful and flexible CPU, allows for an innovative scene-based switching architecture that simply isn’t possible on a traditional FPGA-based system used by other video switchers,” explains the company. “This architecture allows creators to build and configure complex scenes consisting of video sources, custom graphics, media playback and more, and then switch between these scenes with the press of a button. This means that an entire production can be planned, crafted and laid out across the RØDECaster Video’s seven scene buttons, and you can simply switch between them throughout your show.”
It’s a neat feature. Dual-engine processing is cool too. This allows users to view entire scenes and complex compositions in a preview screen whilst sending an entirely different composition to the live program feed.
Other key features include:
A large 2-inch touchscreen and versatile encoder enables quick-and-easy navigation of video, audio and other settings, transition type and timing, as well as displaying critical information about the production.
The unit allows you to stream directly to all major platforms via Wi-Fi, Ethernet or USB and record directly to an external USB storage device, including multitrack and ISO recording for complete post-editing flexibility. Remote control, user-assignable graphics and media, custom scene building, audio mixing and effects, and other advanced configuration options are available via RØDE Central.
If you’re looking to find space in your set up for it, it weighs 1.26 kg (2.77 lbs) and is 132.5 x 305.9 x 61.4 mm (5.22 x 12.04 x2.42 inches). Pricing is $1199 / £999 (inc VAT) or equivalent. Availability is lumpy: while some US resellers seem to have stock, others are listing it as a pre-order only, and RØDE’s own website indicates that you may have to join a wait list.
