Last Thursday, March 13th we hosted our first in person event for RedShark readers/ subscribers and followers in over five years at NEON, Piccadilly in London, England. Here’s how it went.
The last event we hosted was in LA back in December 2019. This was becoming normal for us, the previous two years had seen our Connect events for filmmakers cover topics like “Live Production”, “Working with high resolution images”, and “4K workflows for filmmakers” in locations including Berlin, Amsterdam, London, New York and LA. Getting these events back up and running was an important step for us and I need to thank our community of industry professionals for coming out and supporting us back then.
Then, y’know, Covid.
But we’re now officially back and staging events again. For last week’s event we partnered with ASUS ProArt monitors. Working with a single partner would usually be a challenge (typically we have five or more companies supplying tools that connect together in a workflow) but the ASUS team was a dream to work with. We were joined by ASUS Senior Director GTM strategies and Partnerships, Amber Lin (above) who had flown in from ASUS HQ in Taipei to introduce our speakers and provide a brief but compelling history of ProArt monitors from idea concept to today. Their range of ProArt monitors is becoming respected in the higher end post production companies and the range of monitors covers most price points and whatever spec requirement you or your company need whether that's for editing, colour grading, VFX work or general creative design.
The main product on show was their brand new PA32UCDM 32” 4K QD OLED display that will be shipping later this month. There was also a lot of attention around the new 8K PA32KCX which was running a real time 8K render from the incredible multi GPU (4x ASUS TUF RT 5090) Renderbox NANO and the new 27” 5K PA27JCV.
A huge thank you must go to our speakers. Charles Cherin, Co-Chairman of the Visual Effects Society (VES) London, opened with some poignant words around the London VFX industry. There were attendees that until very recently were employed at Technicolor and Jellyfish, offering support to these individuals is vital right now. There were excellent presentations from industry legends like Victor Perez and Leon Barnard, as well as an in-depth and captivating piece on display image technology from TV and Display specialist Vincent Teoh.
Special recognition has also got to go to our RedShark team for planning and promoting the event. But hats off to our very own chief Innovation Officer, David Winter for hosting the event *brilliantly*! The media industry is a tough crowd but you worked them well Dave! Great seeing so many people walk away with the prizes donated by ASUS as well.
Finally thank you to all the RedShark readers that attended, more than 100 of you came along which is a brilliant turn out! Seeing and meeting so many of you in person was the most important part of my evening. We’ve come a long way since starting this site back in 2012 and continue to adapt and change as a platform just as you all adapt and change as artists and professionals.
There will be more of these, that is a promise…. Wherever you are we will do our best to bring an event to a location near you!
