Things are about to get very interesting at the lower end of the cinema camera market with RED now offering the 6K KOMODO for 40% less than it did at the start of the week.

It will take a while to percolate all the way through the reseller network, but a 6K RED KOMODO body can now be yours for $2995, a massive 40% saving on the listed price of $4995 that it started the week at.

This, of course, follows the September 2024 price cut of $1000. All in all the KOMODO is now half the price it was only six months ago.

That’s a big move and likely indicates that there’s a new camera on the way in the KOMODO space which will feature a Z-Mount in the same manner that the $6995 KOMODO-X now does. It’s also going to have reverberations in the used market as well, a new camera undercutting a pre-owned one always leading to a period of significant adjustment to second-hand prices.

It obviously makes the KOMODO a more tempting buy, especially as the new firmware update RED has also released for it is a decent one too. V1.8.3 for KOMODO adds:

  • Onboard LCD User Pages: Streamlined access to camera settings with the new onboard LCD user pages, allowing for quick adjustments on the fly.
  • Faster Calibration Times: The latest firmware update significantly reduces the calibration time, ensuring that KOMODO is ready to shoot faster than ever.
  • Function Toggle via Top Buttons: The new firmware enables faster toggling of key functions using the top buttons, offering users greater ease of control and efficiency in the field.

“Last year, we successfully reduced the cost of the KOMODO, which was met with incredible enthusiasm from filmmakers,” said RED Digital Cinema CEO, Keiji Oishi. “Our decision to lower the price of KOMODO now has been influenced by a recent surge in interest in RED and our technologies following the acquisition by Nikon. This is the beginning of a new chapter, where we introduce members of our recently combined family to the power of RED and continue with our goal of providing the most advanced, highest quality, professional image capture solutions possible, and pushing the boundaries of what is possible in filmmaking.”

The corresponding pre-bundled KOMODO packs also have new pricing with the Starter Pack coming in at $4500 and the Production Pack at $5500. Head to red.com for the details. Now, over to the other camera manufacturers...
