Every weekend we are going to take a look at the accounts we are following on Instagram and pick out one of our favourites to dig a little deeper into what they do and how they do it. This week we feature director and DP David Barker.
David is a commercial filmmaker based in Asia and we think his work is exemplary. His style is very clean and defined, with bold colours and lighting. We asked David a few questions about himself and his work, and we have embedded his showreel below. Follow David on his social media channels on Instagram @barkerdavidbarker, and Facebook @DavidBarkermedia.
Can you briefly describe yourself, your style and what you do?
I'm a commercial director/DP and I run a production company in Taipei. I’m Canadian, but I’ve been based in Asia since around 2002. I started out as a photographer, events and then later Fashion and commercial, then gradually migrated over to cinematography and video production. We do a lot of car/motorcycle work, as well as beauty/Fashion. We are not a big company, but we average about $1m USD sales a year.
What project are you most proud of?
I’m always hyper-critical of my work and always shaking my head, promising to do better, but I did one commercial for a Motorcyle company a few years ago that seemed to open a lot of doors for me.
Is there any advice you'd give an aspiring filmmaker?
One piece of advice that I wish I would have followed myself so that I would have avoided some pitfalls or be in a better position than I am now... (1) choose your customers wisely. Don’t be tempted to take every job that comes along.
(2) specialize in something you are good at and enjoy. E.g. cars, comedy narrative, beauty, etc
