While the upcoming Ursa Mini 4K may not be getting as much press as its 4.6K sibling, Blackmagic loaned two Ursa Mini 4K cameras for a shoot during IBC that shows off the camera's imaging capabilities.
Blackmagic, once again, was the talk of this year's NAB Show bacj in April, unveiling the Ursa Mini and a 4.6K sensor option for the Ursa and forthcoming Ursa Mini camera lines. We're fast approaching the release of these cameras, but an Amsterdam-based production company, the Dreamers, received two Ursa Mini 4K cameras on loan and made this piece of 'wedding cinema':
The Amsterdam connection is significant; Blackmagic was in town to exhibit at IBC2015 and the Dreamers scored the cameras on September 10th, the first day of IBC. Less than a week and two weddings later, we have an excellent sample of Ursa Mini 4K footage.
Here's some production info from the Dreamers:
"Most of the footage was shot in Prores HQ (which looks amazing - even more so than the BMCC), Full HD, 60fps. We used all sorts of lenses: Canon 24-70 2.8L, 50mm 1.2L, 100mm 2.8L IS, 17-55 2.8 IS and the Sigma 18-35 1.8. Please note that while the firmware we had on the Ursa Mini was as close to the final firmware as possible, but was still in beta nonetheless."
From my eye, the images look pleasing and familiar, as the camera shares the same sensor as the BMPC and Ursa 4K cameras. Users with bigger equipment budgets will likely choose one of the 4.6K options. However, the Ursa Mini 4K will present a lot of camera for $3000.
