Blur Studios: now that is what we call a showreel

Blockbuster after blockbuster...

If you’re after something a little high-octane for this Sunday evening/Monday morning you could do a lot worse than check out Blur Studios’ animation/vfx showreel below.

Blur Studios was set up by director Tim Miller and visual effects supervisor David Stinnett in Culver City, California in 1995, and has worked on what can only be described as a ridiculous number of high-profile projects in the 21 years since. Indeed, their current animation/vfx showreel is as much as a tour of blockbuster cinema highlights of the past couple of years, and certainly a good showcase for what can be done with modern CGI given enough time, budget and talent (big amounts of the last two resources meaning you don’t have to spend as much of the first one).

It is spectacular, it is high-octane, but for our money our favourite parts of this 04:07 tour-de-force are the quiet ones, the ones where you realise that whole landscape in front of you is either CG or an extreme digital set extension and your only real clue about that is its place in a showreel. Kudos.

Physics, lighting, textures, camera angles, lenses, actors, audio, movies, ads, kid’s animation…it’s all in there. And there’s a classic Deadpool gag at the end too. What’s not to like?
