One of the latest bits of nonsense to float around social media is news of a physics-defying flying drone camera for the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra. That just ain't going to fly - literally.
CES 2025 is rapidly approaching and will be with us in a little over three weeks. We'll have a preview in the next few days but let's shoot something out of the sky first. And no, that's not reports of car-sized drones over New Jersey, but something much much smaller, the rumoured camera drone coming in the new Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra.
This is from YouTuber AR technology.
So, what's wrong here? Well, let's start by looking at real world drone technology. The DJI Neo is one of the smallest drones available on the market at the moment and that has a takeoff weight of 135 grams (4.76 oz). Which, frankly, is fairly remarkable, though it does mean that it will struggle in anything over a mild breeze (29 kph or 18 mph).
That is the smallest size that DJI can shrink its drone tech into and come up with anything useful. The latest released Samsung Galaxy phone, meanwhile, the S25 Ultra, weighs 232 grams (8.18 oz). That would mean that Samsung would have had to make a 50 gram or so drone, developed a battery, camera, and control electronics that would fit into a 4 cm body along with the four propellers, and given over a whole load of the phone's valuable internal real estate to house it in an internal hanger?
Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings, but no. The CIA might have developed something similar to keep tabs on your crazy uncle, but Samsung hasn't.
Besides, what's coming in the actual Galaxy S25 Ultra should be enough to turn heads. The rumor mill is hitting high gear with talk of upgraded cameras, a Snapdragon 8 Elite processor, and even Qi2 charging, so it should be comfortably the best Android phone on the market again. It just won't fly...
