Nikon releases new N-Log LUTS ‘supervised by RED’

You’re not going to get a new Nikon/RED camera at IBC (unless people are playing their cards *very* close to their chest) but new N-Log LUTS signal the direction of travel.

Four types of Creative LUTs (and one type of Technical LUT) are now available free of charge for Nikon users and can be utilised for colour grading video footage shot in N-Log with Nikon mirrorless cameras. They can also be loaded onto external monitors to preview a close-to finished look while shooting on location.

The four Creative LUTs have been developed alongside the team at RED and give at least an indication that there are steadily more detailed crossovers starting to happen between the two companies’ technologies and developers. It might only be a small thing, but it’s a definite start.

“These LUTs enable users to apply the essence of RED’s color science to Nikon mirrorless camera video workflows, making it possible to achieve a look comparable to video shot on RED cinema cameras when working with N-Log footage,” says the company.

So, what do you get?

The Achromic LUT adds a low contrast monochrome effect to user’s footage while preserving texture details - "creating a soft, refined look with a classic feel."

The Film Bias LUT adds a warm, film-like aesthetic to N-Log footage, with what the company says are balanced colours and natural skin tones.

The Film Bias Bleach Bypass LUT boasts a high-contrast, desaturated look inspired by the bleach bypass film technique – providing footage with a harsh, faded feel.

Lastly, the Film Bias Offset LUT offers a film-like warmth and softness by applying a unique combination of colour correction and contrast adjustment.
