The new NIKKOR Z 28-135mm f/4 Power Zoom represents the first stage of a probable shift to a more video focus from the RED owner.

Nikon has announced the development of the NIKKOR Z 28-135mm f/4 PZ, a standard zoom full-frame lens that is going to be compatible with the Z-mount system.

Beyond that, details are annoyingly sparse. “It will be developed for ease of use and superior optical performance for video recording and will support efficient recording for documentaries and location work by a solo videographer or small crew,” says the company.

And, apart from the pic that shows you can switch between manual and autofocus and the zoom rocker on the left side of the lens body indicating that, Yes, it is indeed a power zoom, that’s pretty much your lot.

It is an interesting change of direction for the company though and a bit of a signalling of intent given its acquisition of RED earlier this year. The company has dabbled in video glass before, but of late hybrid lenses have been as far as it has been willing to go down that path, and even they have been photography-led.
