Angelbird has an excellent reputation when it comes to the storage arena, and its latest releases only serve to bolster that reputation further. We have two new products to discuss here: first the new Card Reader PKT – which comes in three flavours: Card Reader PKT CFexpress A, Card Reader PKT CFexpress B, and Card Reader PKT SD – and second the new AV PRO CFexpress A memory card (which makes a great pairing with the new Card Reader PKT CFexpress A).

Card Readers PKT

These compact powerhouses are built for portability and multi-tasking efficiency. They are going to allow creatives to enact effortless post-production workflows and get high-speed support for seamless data transfers, external recording with USB-C compatibility, and lag-free editing directly from the card within the card reader.

Fast data transfer is, of course, a given, and the three different models in the new Card Readers PKT series offer effortless file offloading supported by USB-C 3.2 Gen 2x2 with up to 20 Gb/s connectivity (up to 5 Gb/s for the Card Reader PKT SD).

They feature color-coded PKT Caps to differentiate the technology. The CFexpress Type A is Rust Red; the CFexpress Type B is Yellow; and the SD is Petrol Blue.

All three include valuable features that creatives are going to value in their day to day workflows. Direct lag-free processing provides maximum speed editing support, eliminating the need for offloading. Portable card protection keeps the memory cards secure inside the card reader during transportation, while an LED Write-Protect-Switch for secure data management prevents the horrors of accidental file deletion or card formatting. Hot swap support allows for changing Angelbird memory cards without interrupting operations.

The Solid Connect design features a secure, recessed connection point within the card reader to ensure stable, uninterrupted data transfer and minimize cable wear and tear. And firmware updates can be performed directly on Angelbird CFexpress Type A and B cards to maintain ongoing camera compatibility, features, and optimal performance.

A rock-solid build as you would expect from Angelbird makes the hard-anodized aluminum card reader temperature, shock, ESD, and overload proof. The Card Readers PKT will include a 32 cm (12.6’’) super flexible, high-speed coaxial 40 Gb/s USB-C 4.0 cable when they ship and a three-year limited warranty will also be included (though this must be activated within 30 days of purchase).

Pricing and availability

The Card Readers PKT are available for pre-order right now. All three models, the Card Reader PKT CFexpress A, Card Readers PKT CFexpress B, and Card Reader PKT SD will retail for $99.99 / €99.99.

AV PRO CFexpress A cards

That’s not all that we’re seeing from the company today though, as it is also announcing the superior sustained performance of the new AV PRO CFexpress A cards.

Featuring VPG 400 certification, these are designed for demanding production environments, offering reliable speed and performance that supports professional Sony Alpha and FX workflows. They offer a sustained write speed of 800 MB/s and a CFexpress 4.0 Type A classification standard, making them a future-proof investment that delivers best-in-class performance and ensures upgraded support alongside new camera features and model releases.

Engineered specifically for Sony’s range of CFexpress Type A cameras, the cards are compatible with a wide variety of models including the Sony α1, Sony α1 II, Sony α7 IV, Sony α7R V, Sony α7 S III, Sony α9 III, Sony FX3, Sony FX30, and Sony FX6. The sustained write speed of 800 MB/s supports consistent recording quality across all available modes, making it an ideal fit for cinema-grade video recording and burst photography.

The card boasts a maximum read speed of 1800 MB/s and a maximum write speed of 1650 MB/s. It utilises Angelbird’s Stable Stream technology to ensure a steady and consistent read and write performance throughout the entire capacity of the card. Advanced Thermal Management features, meanwhile, protect both the card and its content from overheating.

Usefully, firmware updates can be performed directly on Angelbird CFexpress Type A cards to maintain ongoing compatibility, enhance features, and optimize performance, provided an Angelbird Card Reader is used.

Additionally, the card includes an in-house Data Recovery Service on both hard- and software levels, along with a three-year limited warranty (again, which needs to be activated within 30 days of purchase at www.angelbird.com/warranty).

Pricing and availability

The new AV PRO CFexpress A cards will be available in 256 GB, 512 GB, and 1 TB versions. Recommended pricing is: 256 GB - $/€ 199.99; 512 GB - $/€ 349.99; and 1 TB - $/€ 499.99.
