NASA shares video of ferocious Hurricane Milton from space

Astronauts on the ISS have shared video of Hurricane Milton, one of the most ferocious storms in recent history, as it churns across the Gulf of Mexico towards Florida.

Hurricane Milton looks set to become one of those generational storms where the damage it causes is so egregious that the name is retired forever. 

Some of the data from earlier in the week was absolutely jaw-dropping as the screenshotted tweet below shows. Currently Milton is set to hit around the Tampa area (though it may wobble south) as a Cat 3 storm, producing a 10-15 foot storm surge, and still be a hurricane after it crosses Florida and exits into the Atlantic.

If tornadoes are almost the definition of the phrase a terrible beauty from the ground, hurricanes are the same from space. NASA has released two videos taken from the ISS that detail Milton as it crosses the Gulf which you can see below.

Also, as the ever-excellent space.com reports, NASA astronaut Matthew Dominick is currently stationed in the Dragon Endeavour module waiting to return from the ISS to Earth (a return that is, of course, being delayed by Hurricane Milton). He used at least some of the time to take pictures of the monster as the ISS passed over on Tuesday.

However, that will be the last we see of Milton from the ISS at least. The ISS won't now be passing over the region until Monday 14 October, and when it does all we can hope is that it doesn't capture as much destruction as is currently feared. Stay safe, everyone.
