The fascinating experiment of designing a new camera in plain sight continues, with the Nexus G1 Project Update #8 adding four new features to the highly anticipated device.
Nexus Project Chief, Thomas Bolland, is back with what he says is an interim update on the Nexus G1, which is still aiming for a launch this year at a circa $3000 price point.
Project Update #8 includes the news that the team behind the camera now includes three skilled software and electronics engineers. Nexus Cameras has also partnered with a large electronics design and manufacturing company to build the electronics, though itโs not saying who just yet.
Perhaps more to the point, the Nexus G1 has four new features.
The Nexus G1 will now have a video monitor feed that can be displayed on the rear 4โ control panel screen (previously this only displayed the control menu). This means users can now frame shots and set exposure accurately without the 5โ monitor or another external monitor connected. This is going to be useful for setting exposure/focus on a drone setup or monitoring on a super small handheld setup.
The Nexus G1 will have accurate evaluative exposure measurement, which will allow auto exposure using the E-ND module or aperture. As Bolland notes, previously this was a potential feature, but it has now been confirmed.
The control panel of the Nexus G1 is now a high brightness 1000 nit touchscreen custom designed for high visibility outdoors.
The Nexus G1 will now support Timecode Input & Output directly via USB-C without jamming to an audio channel. Two new USB-C ports have been added to the top of the camera for Timecode and other purposes.
Bolland also reports that development of the Nexus operating system (NexusOS) and electronics hardware is progressing โextremely well.โ
It needs to as well, as he promises that with the update the company will show the latest Nexus G1 prototype powered and running NexusOS. โAs for development timeline, we still plan to have units available starting Q2 this year,โ he says. That is of course a fair ways from a commitment to have units for sale in the same time period, but it should give the industry enough of a sighter to understand what itโs getting as the team gears up for production proper.
Anyone who wants the inside track on it above and beyond that is directed to the new Nexus Discord Server which is just launching.
