Iron Glass has achieved what many people thought would be impossible; a rehousing of the Tokina 28-70mm f/2.8 lens.
The Tokina 28-70 f/2.8 lens was always considered to be an almost impossible project for a cinema style rehousing due to its internal complexity, consisting as it does of 16 elements in 12 groups, along with five different movements happening simultaneously. But, it seems Iron Glass has managed to do it, even bringing improvements along the way.
The rehoused lens has had the number of iris blades increased from 8 to 15. The rehoused lens is also now parfocal, holding focus throughout the zoom range. Focus rotation has also increased to 300-degrees, while minimum focus distance has been improved to 1'9".
The lens comes as a PL mount, with an image circle designed to cover a full-frame sensor. The body is now composed of aluminium. The Phenix 28-70 is primarily aimed at rental, but it will be available to purchase for those with deep pockets, although expect to wait 3-6 months. Iron Glass itself will source the original Tokina lenses for rehousing, so customers do not need to concern themselves with that aspect. So, what about that price? In order to own one of these puppies you will need to find a cool $13.5k - with a 50% deposit up front.
