Panasonic has unveiled its latest LUMIX GH6 firmware 3.0 update with improvements and new functionalities, plus a paid software key will add the ARRI LogC3 picture profile, giving a pretty cool option for cinematographers and video professionals.
It was a bit of a surprise to see the LUMIX GH6 firmware 3.0 announcement, given that the GH7 was announced very recently. But it is still a welcome update, adding some interesting new features and capabilities.
With the firmware 3.0 update, the Panasonic LUMIX GH6 will support the ARRI LogC3 picture profile via the optional paid software key, DMW-SFU3A. ARRI LogC3 will then be found in the GH6’s photo styles.
Additionally, the LUMIX GH6 firmware 3.0 includes other improvements and support for the DMW-XLR2 microphone adapter. There isn’t a 32-bit float recording feature. This is part of the free version 3.0 update.
In the past, Panasonic released firmware updates that allowed the LUMIX GH6 to record direct to SSD via USB, ProRes RAW external recording, BRAW external recording and 4K 120p, and more. It really made the GH6 a powerful camera.
The upshot is that if you’re happy with your GH6, or perhaps you’re not yet ready to move to the Panasonic LUMIX GH7, the version 3.0 update will add some new features and functionality, particularly the supported ARRI LogC3 picture profile.
While the update itself is free, you’ll need to pay $199 to get the LogC3 feature, which is not a bad price. It's really up to you if you feel the $200 can be spent on the ARRI LogC3 picture profile or on something else and be put towards a new microphone, lens, etc. It's perhaps worth mentioning here that the GH7 does feature the ARRI LogC3 as standard.
