Fookus Pookus soon to launch lightweight RainawayTV snow and rain deflector

It took Estonia’s Fookus Pookus four years to design its snow and rain deflector for use with spidercams, cablecams, telescopic cranes and tracking systems.

The TV version of Fookus Pookus’s new Rainaway system is launching in a few weeks' time, shortly after which a Rainaway Cine will follow. The RainawayTV is a spinning disc made of H-K9L optical glass, a borosilicate crown glass known for its high optical quality and durability, which Fookus Pookus has added a hydrophobic layer to. The RainawayTV supports a mounting diameter of 95mm, with smaller lenses supported through the use of adapter rings.

The company claims the 460 gram (16.2 oz) accessory is the most lightweight on the market with the competition weighing anything from 615 grams to 10 kg (21.7 oz to 22 lb!). For maximum compatibility, the RainawayTV takes its power — ranging from 12 to 30 V — directly from camera or from an external battery. It consumes only 0.3A while spinning (12 V unit).

A special anti-fogging system creates an airflow between the spinning glass and the lens. Thanks to its special bearing system, the Rainaway is claimed to be the quietest system on the market. It also has smart features such as a PID controller (feedback-based control loop mechanism for continuous control and automatic adjustment) that regulates a user selectable speed control (in 100 RPM steps) between 2000 and 3000 RPM via WiFi.

It also comes with a Wi-Fi access point control interface, customisable start-up speed, acceleration and deceleration, selectable Auto Start functionality, a remote starting option, selectable temperature, current and voltage protection range, and jamming protection. The unit also supports data output, including maximum current, voltage and battery usage (in mAh) per session.

Pricing will be around $9000, with the company already pondering the release of a simpler and cheaper version aimed at solo operators, photographers, and drone operators.

tl;dr

  • The RainawayTV is the lightest deflector on the market at 460 grams (16.2 oz), significantly lighter than competing products that range from 615 grams to 10 kg (21.7 oz to 22 lb).
  • Equipped with a PID controller for speed regulation between 2000 and 3000 RPM, Wi-Fi control interface, and an anti-fogging system, ensuring optimal performance and user convenience.
  • The system operates on 12 to 30 V power, either directly from the camera or an external battery, while consuming only 0.3A at 12 V.
  • Following the RainawayTV launch, a Rainaway Cine model is set to be released, and a simpler, cheaper version is being considered for solo operators and drone users.
