Firmware updates from Canon and Nikon

Canon has released a firmware update for its Cinema EOS cameras and XF605 camcorder, while Nikon bumps up the Nikon Z9 to v5.10 and adds some new features to make video recording easier.

All six Cinema EOS cameras are getting upgraded, as well as the XF605 Pro camcorder. The main headline is that the latest cinema cameras, the EOS C400 and EOS C80, will now have native compatibility with Frame.io's camera-to-cloud technology. This will enable users to send proxy files while recording internally, directly from the camera, for a faster and more secure path from production to post. Both cameras will also be able to output Full HD while recording at higher resolutions, and will add compatibility with the new RF70-200mm F2.8L IS USM Z zoom lens, and the RF24mm F1.4L VCM and RF50mm F1.4L VCM hybrid lenses. 

The EOS C400 camera is also adding a 1.5x anamorphic desqueeze display assist option. This will make it easier to see how your image will translate when shooting with anamorphic lenses. 

The 60-24p pull-down feature, designed with houses of worship in mind, has been enhanced to better maintain exposure when changing frame rates with an assignable button. The EOS C400 will also include camera media switching via an assignable button.

As far as the EOS C500 Mark II and EOS C300 Mark III cameras go, both will get the option to output a peripheral recorder display from their 12G SDI and HDMI interfaces. And when the teleconverter feature is activated, both cameras' LCD monitors will display an icon to indicate the feature is turned on. These features are also being added to the EOS C400 and EOS C80 cameras. 

The EOS C70 will also get some noteworthy enhancements, including compatibility with the RF-17-120 Cine-Servo lens and the other RF lenses mentioned in context of the C400 and C80. 

The R5C gains compatibility with those same lenses as the C70 as well as the ability to power the lens via the LP-E6P battery while recording an 8K60p. This is going to allow users to access features such as dual-pixel CMOS autofocus, optical image stabilization, and more. Additionally, subject tracking can be started with touch control, and there is now the ability to move the AF frame around the display by dragging or sliding it to the desired location, making it faster and easier to get a shot ready. 

As far as the XF605 camcorder goes, the focus ring is now more responsive, and the headphone volume control has been modified as well as adding an option to output peripheral recorder display out of its 12G SDI and HDMI interfaces. 

There are updates also for the Canon multi-camera control app. Version 1.1 added custom picture detail settings, assist functions including waveform monitor, false color, and markers, and tally display options. Version 1.2 will add support for iPad and the option to switch between cameras with a swipe.

Nikon Z9

Over with the Nikon Z9,  firmware version 5.10 adds a new [Shutter mode], allowing the user to set the shutter angle to one of 15 steps between 5.6° and 360°. This eliminates the need to select a shutter speed whenever the frame rate is adjusted, allowing users to always achieve optimal motion blur at the desired frame rate.

In addition, users can now change the colour of the zebra pattern display, as well as customise the size, transparency, and display position of brightness information displays such as the histogram and wave-form monitor. This should make video recording easier by allowing the user to confirm appropriate exposure, even when recording high-contrast scenes.
