Netflix tops the Emmy nominations for 2024 while Shōgun is top show

Shōgun leads the shows with 25 nominations

Another year, another Emmys. The nominations for the 76th annual awards show were announced from Hollywood's El Capitan theatre yesterday. And it's all very streaming-centric.

Due to last year's historic WGA and SAG-AFTRA strike action, the 2023 event was moved from its usual September slot to January, in case you were wondering why it feels like the Emmys just happened, with everything returning to normal back to it’s usual slot with no host announced yet.

The shows with the most nominations are all part of the Disney empire, with FX’s Shōgun (25), The Bear (23), as well as Only Murders in The Building (21) having the most. FX however was second to Netflix, which garnered a whopping total of 107 nominations. Habitual front-runner HBO was demoted to a surprising third place with 91.

When you combine all of its properties — ABC, Disney+, FX, and Hulu — the Walt Disney Company had a historic total of 183 nominations.

With (deservedly) award-gobbling shows like Succession and Better Call Saul finishing last year, the drama category is an exciting field of newness. The only returning show is Netflix’s The Crown.

The brilliant Baby Reindeer proves that it’s a lot more than its controversial headlines with a total of 11 Emmy nominations, including for best limited or anthology series. Nava Mau was also the first trans woman in Emmy history to be nominated as best supporting actress in a limited or anthology series for her role in the show.

A bonus special mention goes to Matt Berry for finally getting a nomination for his phenomenal work in What We Do In The Shadows.
