Users can now send ProRes RAW files to Resolve in CinemaDNG format, whilst Godox has released a new LED fresnel light.
DaVinci Resolve editors, rejoice! There's a new app for macOS 12 users called RAW Convertor which will convert ProRes RAW files to CinemaDNG, preserving important metadata. Let's take a look.
If you're using DaVinci Resolve for your post-production needs, you likely already know that the NLE doesn't support the ubiquitous ProRes RAW. Many editors prefer to convert those files to simple ProRes 4444 or 422, but end up losing some data that's important to cutting, including not being able to adjust tint and white balance.
That's where RAW Convertor from programmer and filmmaker Nikolaj Pogněrebko comes in: You'll be able to open the app in macOS 12, import your ProRes RAW files, and batch convert them to CinemaDNG (cDNG) in an uncompressed 16-bit format or lossy compression of varying levels of compression. From there, you'll be able to open and edit the footage in DaVinci Resolve, without losing any of that important metadata.
Nikolaj says more cameras are being added regularly, so make sure you keep the app updated. For now, the cameras supported include.
The pricing is $75 USD per camera via in-app purchases.
File sizes will vary, of course, but here's an example: If the original ProRes RAW file is 4.96 GB, a cDNG 3:1 file will be 6 GB, while 5:1 and 7:1 will be 2.43 GB and 1.53 GB, respectively. cDNG uncompressed will result in a monstrous 24.18 GB file! CinemaDNG doesn't use a Mac's GPU within Resolve, so editing with it might not give the same performance as other codecs.
RAW Convertor is only available for macOS 12 Monterey, and there are no plans for a Windows or Linux version. Learn more and download from the Mac App Store.
