RED Mini-Mags were released over a decade ago, meaning that many SSDs are reaching the end of their lifespan. Enter Cinelux, whose new NEXA-MAG impressively upgrades RED DSMC1 and DSMC2 storage.
The NEXA-MAG is a brand-new, high-performance media solution designed specifically for RED DSMC1 and DSMC2 cameras.
Available in 480GB and 960GB high-speed models, manufacturer Cinelux says the NEXA-MAG features improved thermals, faster components, and a fully optimised design, allowing RED users to extend the life of their cameras rather than having to rely on ageing Mini-Mags.
The units are built around ultra-cool running Toshiba components. By using newer-generation NAND components, Cinelux says it has halved the number of memory chips, significantly improving speed, thermal performance, lifespan, and reliability. By way of illustration the 960GB drives are rated up to 3000 Terabytes Written (TBW) — over four times the lifespan of a standard Samsung 1TB SSD (720 TBW).
NEXA-MAG achieves offload speeds of 570MB/s, a 25% increase over original Mini-Mags. The company has also redesigned the enclosure with precision recesses, making it easier and more secure to insert and remove NEXA-MAG drives - eliminating the awkward grip issues of the original MiniMags. The company even increased the drive’s proportions ensuring a tighter, more stable fit. CNC machined casings with ultra-accurate tolerances are anodised for durability, resulting in less wobble and better security.
An initial batch of 100 are being released at a 30% discount, the NEXA-MAG 480 GB coming in at $385 and the NEXA-MAG 960 GB costing $560. Units will ship in mid-May.
