Canon releases advanced new firmware updates for camcorders

Canon has announced a series of firmware updates for its XF and XA range of camcorders that add new recording abilities.

The updates are available for the XF405, XF400, XA55, XA50, XA40, and the Legria HF G60 and HF G50.

First up is the XA40, which could previously only record MP$ files at 150Mb/s. The new update adds the ability for the camcorder to record XF-AVC in both FHD and 4K UHD modes.

All camcorders receiving the updates will gain a new Custom Picture feature, which will let users tune the sharpness, saturation, skin detail, and noise reduction. Additionally all the camcorders can now have additional features such as zebras, peaking, and markers added to the assignable buttons.

The XF405, XF400, XA55 and XA50 will now feature the EOS Standard and Production Camera colour matrix in the custom picture parameter. This will enable users to be able to better match the look of the camcorders to other cameras in Canon’s range. In an almost ‘one more thing’ moment, the firmware also adds Canon Log 3 added to these cameras for capturing the maximum dynamic range ready for grading.

Autofocus accuracy has apparently been improved across the board, including improvements to accuracy when using the zoom. The XF405 and XF400 gain improved picture quality whilst using the Digital Zoom Advanced 30X mode.
