Blackmagic PYXIS 12K USA price increase shows what we're in for with the Trump Tariffs

Any US customers thinking of buying a new Blackmagic PYXIS 12K when it launches in July just got a $1600 shock.

[Update: This story changed rapidly and needs to be read in context with the one published the following day when the price went down again. Ed.]

The majority of President Trump's highest trade tariffs don't even come in to play for another two days, but we're already seeing price rises. And the new Blackmagic PYXIS 12K illustrates perfectly just what consumers in the US can expect.

Announced on Friday at a price of $4995, Blackmagic Design changed the listing early on Monday morning Australian time to $6595. That's an extra 32%

"Most products in the USA have increased and please check our web site for details," it stated on Facebook. "DaVinci Resolve and Blackmagic Cloud prices remain the same. It's also worth noting the price increases only affect the US and prices in other counties are currently unchanged."

And of course it's not the only product of theirs to increase in price in the US. The PYXIS 6K has also put on 32% and is now listing for $1000 more at $3995. Interestingly enough, though, that doesn't seem to be a blanket increase across the Blackmagic camera range. The URSA Cine 17K 65, for instance, will now set you back $32,995, but that's 'only' a 10% increase on its listed price from last week. Other URSA models seem to show the same lower level increase.

As yet, we don't know why there's a difference. There might be a different manufacturing pipeline for the higher cost cameras or Blackmagic might have decided it needs to absorb some of the tariff costs for higher priced items to keep them attractive to the market. We'll ask. Meanwhile, some US resellers are still listing the PYXIS models at the old prices, but then it is still early days.

None of this, of course, is to pick on Blackmagic. It's just first out of the gate thanks to geography and has a high-profile new camera that illustrates what's happening perfectly. We expect to see similar rises on pretty much everyone's products over the next few days ahead of the next level of tariffs kicking in on April 9.

It's a fast-moving story, none of which is going to ease panicked stock markets, jittery consumers, and exasperated manufacturers. We'll keep you updated. In the meantime, the grey import market is very likely to be kicking into high gear already.
