Powering up

The VCLX LI 1600 represents a significant leap in capacity compared to its predecessors and many competitors. At 1600Wh, it more doubles the capacity of Anton/Bauer's previous VCLX NM2 model (600Wh) while reducing weight. This puts it in a class of its own for high-capacity cinema batteries.

The battery's high capacity could significantly extend run times for power-hungry cinema setups. Anton/Bauer claims an ARRI ALEXA 35 rig drawing 300W at 28V DC could run for 5.3 hours on a single VCLX LI 1600.

Multi-voltage output

The VCLX LI 1600's multi-voltage output is a crucial feature for modern cinema productions. By offering 14.4V, 28V, and 48V outputs, the battery can power a wide range of equipment without the need for separate power supplies or adapters.

  • 14.4V: Typically used for cameras, monitors, and smaller accessories
  • 28V: Often required for larger cinema cameras and some lighting equipment
  • 48V: Used for power-hungry devices like larger LED panels

This versatility allows productions to streamline their power management, potentially reducing the number of batteries needed on set. The ability to power various devices from a single source can also simplify cable management and reduce setup times.

Real-world applications

The VCLX LI 1600's high capacity and rugged design open up new possibilities for production teams:

  1. Remote location shooting: The battery's 1600Wh capacity could, depending on requirements, power a camera rig for up to an entire day in locations without easy access to power sources.
  2. Long takes and continuous shooting: For productions that may need continuous shooting—such as live events or certain artistic shots—the VCLX LI 1600 could significantly reduce the need for battery swaps.
  3. Powering multiple devices: A single VCLX LI 1600 could power a camera, monitor, and wireless video transmitter simultaneously, simplifying on-set power distribution.
  4. Weatherproof productions: The IP65 rating means the battery can withstand dust and water jets, making it suitable for challenging outdoor environments.

Industry trends

The launch of the VCLX LI 1600 reflects broader trends in the film and television production industry:

  1. Increasing power demands: As cinema cameras and accessories become more sophisticated, their power requirements have grown.
  2. Emphasis on mobility: Productions are increasingly seeking ways to reduce weight and increase mobility.
  3. Integrated smart features: The battery's built-in fleet management capabilities reflect a move towards smarter, more connected equipment on set.
  4. Sustainability concerns: While not explicitly referenced as an eco-friendly option, the VCLX LI 1600's high capacity could reduce the overall number of batteries needed for a production, which is always a positive step.

"Our goal is to support the dynamic needs of cinematic production by continually
innovating   power   technology,"   says   Andrew   Hutton,   Head   of   Products   at
Anton/Bauer.   "The   VCLX   LI   1600   embodies   this   commitment   by   offering
exceptional power, a durable design, and advanced safety features providing
reliable and efficient power solutions for any production environment."

Quiet on set

The new battery features passive cooling to eliminate fan noise—crucial for sound recording on set. It lacks an internal charger, which Anton/Bauer says extends battery life by reducing heat buildup.

For productions managing multiple units, the VCLX LI 1600 includes fleet management software. This allows users to monitor battery health metrics like learned capacity, cycle count, and error history via WiFi or USB connection.

The VCLX LI 1600 continues Anton/Bauer's focus on powering high-end production gear. The company has been manufacturing mobile power systems for the broadcast and film industries for over 50 years.

TL;DR

  • New Anton/Bauer VCLX LI 1600 battery for cinema production
  • 1600Wh capacity - double the previous model
  • Multi-voltage output: 14.4V, 28V, and 48V
  • Weatherproof design (IP65-rated)
  • Lighter at 25.5 lbs (11.6 kg)
  • Built-in fleet management capabilities
  • Addresses trends in higher power demands and mobility
  • Pre-order pricing: $4,950 (US) / £3,950 (UK)
