Adobe adds powerful new features to Premiere Pro, After Effects, and Frame.io

Ahead of this year’s Sundance festival kicking off, Adobe has announced a potent slew of new updates for Premiere Pro, After Effects, and Frame.io.

Adobe has quite the presence at Sundance, which given its steadily increasing domination of the post on the films screened there, is unsurprising. As such it feels more than happy to break the usual update cycle centred round trade shows and match them to the opening of the Park City festival tomorrow.

A massive 83% of the films presented there use Adobe Creative Cloud products, 73% used either Adobe Premier Pro or Frame.io, and 60% of films use Adobe Premiere Pro either as their primary or secondary NLE. As far as Adobe’s concerned the figures are all going in the right direction too, up from 82, 68, and 57% respectively last year.

And the movies that might creep onto the Sundance slate next year will be able to take advantage of some interesting new tools that feature in the latest beta releases from the company.

The new Media Intelligence and the new Search Panel in Adobe Premiere Pro (beta) address what the company characterises as a monumental pain point for video editors by letting them quickly locate the perfect film clip from massive libraries of files. The content of clips is automatically recognized, including objects, locations, camera angles, and more. And with the new Search panel, editors can use natural language to find visuals, spoken words, or content with embedded metadata such as shoot date or camera type – all at the same time.

That happens on-device. The next feature needs the cloud, which is understandable because it’s Caption Translation. Currently available in 17 languages, it will automatically translate from the initially generated (and corrected where necessary) captions to create new captions timed with the originals. Multiple caption tracks can be visible at the same time and yes, you can also use them in text-based editing workflows.

All these features are available now in beta. For more information on how to access the beta apps, please visit the Premiere Pro (beta) page.

New in After Effects and Frame.io

After Effects hasn’t been forgotten in the upgrades. Improved Caching that uses both computer RAM and hard disks will allow users to play back an entire composition faster than ever before. In fact, all computers that meet the minimum specifications will be able to play back an entire composition the moment it’s cached.

There is also improved HDR Support that now allows users to import, monitor and export HDR content.

Frame.io, meanwhile, now features expanded Camera to Cloud (C2C) support for Canon. Customers can now automatically upload and access high-quality footage directly from Canon EOS C80 and EOS C400 cameras in Frame.io, unlocking real-time collaboration, accelerated video workflows and a seamless experience between production and post.
